An analysis is made of the plasma flow in the transition region between the front of a detached shock wave and the magnetopause. Conditions for the formation of the magnetic barrier are examined, and the location of its outer boundary is investigated. The proposed model describes two limiting cases: i.e., when the flow in the region in front of the barrier either is fully determined by the two-dimensional character of the Ampere forces in the barrier region or is not affected at all by this two-dimensionality.
