Recent experimental results on the synthesis of formaldehyde in a mixture of frozen gases (50% H2O; 50% CO2) bombarded by 1.5 MeV helium ions are applied to the interaction of low energy interstellar cosmic rays with cometary nuclei. It is suggested that this process can be an effective mechanism for H2CO formation in nuclei of comets.
