QSO 0453-423 (zQSO = 2.66) was imaged with a narrow-band filter centered on [O II] 3727 Å at the redshift of a strong intervening absorption complex (zabs = 0.7256). Comparison with a broad-band exposure revealed a small nonstellar object 29arcsec from the QSO line of sight. Spectroscopic follow-up confirmed the [O II] emission and detected [O III] 5007 Å. The angular separation between the emission patch and the absorption at the same redshift is the largest of those thus far reported. It is suggested that extended gas in the vicinity of galaxies produces the QSO absorption lines. A lack of correlation between absorption velocity widths and either distance to, or strength of, the [O II] emission at the same redshift argues against high-[O II] surface brightness star-forming regions at these redshifts (0.4 < z < 0.8).
