The instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are described with particular attention given to the Faint Object Camera (FOC), which is one of ESA's contributions to the HST. The FOC comprises two complete and independent camera systems, either of which can be selected for viewing, which magnify the high-resolution image produced by the mirror system of the HST and extract from it the vast amount of detail it contains. Each camera comprises a combination of very precise optical elements, to focus the incoming photons on special detectors. The initial results produced by the FOC confirmed the excellent optical performance that it exhibited upon its construction. It is emphasized that, even with the current reduced performance of the HST optical system, the FOC makes it possible to observe and analyze celestial objects in the UV light range much fainter than ever seen, with a resolution much sharper than obtained with any other instrument before.
