The paper describes the preparation of the high-Tc superconductor HgBa2CuO(4+x) (Hg-1201) and presents results of its characterization in terms of flux pinning, granularity, and the irreversibility field, H*(T), using X-ray, SEM, TEM, and magnetization measurements. It is found that the H*(T) of this compound is significantly higher than for the two- and three-copper-layer Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O compounds but lower than for YBaCu3O7, and that the low-temperature flux pinning is strong. However, Hg-1201 is electromagnetically granular in all but very weak fields, while the requirements of a high-Tc superconductor for large-scale applications emphasize the availability of superconductor in polycrystalline form which is not electromagnetically granular. It is suggested that a high degree of grain alignment might to remove this granularity.
