Mars Surface: Erosion, Mars Surface: Channels

Scientific paper

As in Siberia, the planet Mars exhibits wide outflow channels. Thermal erosion is considered to be the result of ground thawing produced by heat transfer between the water flow and the frozen ground. It is proposed that the widening of Martian outflow channels may be best explained by thermal erosion. In order to estimate the thermal erosion efficiency, a one-dimensional model is discussed.
