The authors present time-resolved CCD spectroscopic observations of the Hα region of V471 Tau covering all phases of the orbit, extending over six consecutive nights (12 orbital cycles) and including simultaneous broadband continuum photometry. The time-dependent profile of the Hα feature changes from a definitive absorption line to a moderately strong emission line systematically with phase, reaching maximum emission strength at the phase of secondary eclipse. This suggests that the inner hemisphere of the chromosphere of the K dwarf component is fluorescing in response to the incident ultraviolet radiation field from the hot white dwarf primary star. The data show also evidence of an active magnetic region on the K dwarf.
