In Martian subsurface ice, melting can furnish the triggering event that leads to liquefaction and fluidization of the system. Such a sequence of events can also account for the catastrophic release of water at the surface due to the slow rate of melting of subsurface ice; the collapse of the system occurs when melting reaches a threshold, after which the formation of catastrophic floods is induced.
