The present study focuses on the simulation of the aero-thermal interaction between the flow field surrounding a re-entry vehicle and its thermal protection system (TPS). A procedure has been developed to couple computational fluid-dynamic (CFD) results and thermo-structural simulations for both 2D and 3D cases. The developed tool was applied for a first thermal analysis of the EXPERT configuration in the region of the open flaps for conditions corresponding to maximum heating for the 6-km/sec trajectory.
