The formation of a magnetic cavity around the cometary nucleus is studied in a non-stationary quasi one-dimensional fluid treatment. Characteristic features of spatial density, velocity and magnetic field profiles observed on comet P/Halley by the Giotto spacecraft can be reproduced. The observed relative density maximum ahead of the cavity (pile-up region) may be interpreted as a consequence of reduced recombination.
