A plasma wind tunnel was used to study the near wake of a sphere in the supersonic flow of a nonequilibrium rarefied plasma; the experiment was conducted with a view to investigating the features of wakes of flight vehicles in the ionospheric plasma. The plasma source parameter values were as follows: discharge current of 8 A; discharge voltage of 120 V; maximum magnetic field strength at the source axis of 650 Oe. Experimental data are compared with numerical results for two wake models.
