A novel method is proposed for determining the limits of electron concentration variations in a plasma along the line of sight from the precontinuum of the Balmer series. The characteristic value of n(e) for volumes responsible for hydrogen line emission is about 5 x 10 to the 10th/cu cm. It is concluded that, at small volumes of a quiet prominence, a powerful flarelike energy release takes place which manifests itself in a Balmer precontinuum.
