A compact sensitometer that facilitates exposures as long as a week in a fully lighted laboratory and in a completely controlled atmosphere was developed. The instrument can readily be placed in a refrigerator, freezer, or oven for temperature control. It is used in experiments to see if the hypersensitization techniques developed by astronomers can be used to suppress low intensity reciprocity failure (LIRF) in medical X-ray films. At minus 24 C LIRF is reduced, at minus 85 C it is nearly eliminated. Hypersensitization by baking for 140 min in hydrogen at 65 C greatly suppresses LIRF, even at room temperature.
