Her X-1 was observed by the LAC instrument on board Ginga during four different 35 day cycles between 1988 August and 1989 June. During the Ginga observations, portions of five eclipses occurred. The analysis here shows that the late short-on and late high-state emission comes from a symmetric extended region, which is about 4 × 1010 and 3 × 109 cm across, respectively, for the two states. This is confirmed by an analysis of the pulse shapes. Residual flux during eclipse shows there is always an extended faint emission region. This has 0.5% of the high-state flux but is variable by a factor of about 10 over the 35 day cycle. Iron line emission is detected from the extended region, consistent with the level expected from scattering and fluorescence processes.
