Preliminary results from the charged-particle experiment on the Swedish Viking satellite are presented with particular emphasis on detailed measurements of electron and ion distribution functions. It is shown that the acceleration/heating processes generating ion conics are frequently associated with an acceleration/heating of ionospheric electrons. Evidence for an electrostatic process for the downward acceleration of electrons is examined. Repeated injections of solar-wind plasma in the cleft region are observed.
