Swift is a new observatory to study gamma-ray bursts and their afterglows. Launched in November, 2004, Swift has now completed its activation phase and is detecting about two bursts per week with the Burst Alert Telescope. Swift's other two instruments, X-ray Telescope and Ultra-Violet and Optical Telescope, typically start observing the burst within one to two minutes. We report the initial results from the wide range of burst and afterglow characteristics that have been found.
