The imaging photopolarimeter covers the wavelength region 2.5 to 240 microns, using bulk Si:X and stressed and unstressed Ge:Ga detectors. Most performance parameters determined by preflight calibrations could be confirmed in-flight, although the cosmic radiation outside the earth's radiation belts produces excess noise affecting the faint object detection limit in some channels. The observations range from solar system objects via stars, the interstellar medium to the mapping of galaxies. A cold component was seen in the far infrared of several interacting galaxies. The Serendipity Survey at 175 microns carried out during the satellite slews has covered already several thousand degrees on the sky. Its low detection limit makes it usable as supplement to the IRAS Sky Survey.
