Balloon-borne measurements of ozone made over Natal, Brazil, during the past two years are summarized. The measurements are made by electrochemical concentration cells, the operation of which is described. The average total ozone content obtained through the ozonesonde measurements is 0.275 + or - 0.008 cm STP. This is in good agreement with the average total ozone obtained from the Dobson measurements made on the same day. At pressures above 100 mbar and below approximately 15 mbar the ozone density is found to be higher than that predicted by the model of Hilsenrath and Dunn (1970). It is thought that the discrepancy might derive from the fact that earlier data were gathered using chemiluminescent sondes, which gave lower tropospheric ozone densities.
