Accurate partitioning of the available radiative energy into sensible and latent heat fluxes is of considerable importance in weather and climate prediction and analysis, together with studies in hydrology and ecology. Various methods of estimating latent heat flux (or evaporation) using remotely sensed data are reviewed. A method is proposed for estimating unstressed transpiration from meteorologic satellite data. Considering theory and field observations it is proposed that under many situations unstressed transpiration can expressed as a product of potential evaporation and fractional vegetation cover. Approaches for estimating potential evaporation and fractional cover from meteorological satellite observations (e.g. by METEOSAT and AVHRR) are discussed.
