Observations (made at Sanae, Antarctica) are described of superfast auroral waves (SFAWs), propagating equatorward with speeds of up to 1200 km/s over distances exceeding 1400 km. The altitude and the speed of SFAWs were determined using a novel technique that requires only one point of observation. The SFAW characteristics are described and the generation mechanism of the waves is discussed.
