Cosmic reionization, the transition in the early universe from a neutral to an ionized intergalactic medium, is the last major epoch of cosmic evolution left to explore. Study of the IGM, galaxies, and quasars present during this time is a primary science driver for nearly all future large-area telescopes. Mapping reionization through the redshifted 21 cm line is planned (e.g., MWA), but necessary instrument construction will be difficult. Instead, Sethi et al. (2007) propose using the HI 2s(1/2)-2p(3/2) transition in absorption against the CMB. For the quasar with the blackest Gunn-Peterson trough (z=6.28) the ~40 microK signature will appear near 1361 MHz. This transition may enable study of the EOR with existing high-sensitivity observing systems. GBT, ATCA, and Parkes are most promising. Each has unique capabilities. To assess which is best, we request 36h of test time on Parkes to evaluate instrument performance and techniques as early as possible in the Apr08 term to avoid the Sun. We have received 30h on the GBT for its coming trimester. We are proposing a similar program to this one separately to ATCA.
