Scientific paper

The initial operation, or 'first light', of the 3.6-meter telescope of the European Southern Observatory on La Silla mountain in the Chilean Andes is discussed. Problems encountered on the first night of operation are reviewed along with subsequent observations of the dwarf galaxy in Sculptor, the Tarantula nebula (30 Doradus) in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and other southern-sky objects. The optical and mechanical operation of the telescope is considered to be nearly perfect.
