Scientific paper

The ESA FIRST (Far IR and Submillimeter Space Telescope) is described in terms of scientific objectives, science payload, spacecraft and mission design, and the current project schedule. FIRST is one of the four cornerstone missions in the 'Horizon 2000' long term ESA science program plan. FIRST will open up the last major, virtually unexplored, part of the electromagnetic spectrum, the submillimeter/FIR (1 mm (300 GHZ) to 0.1 mm (3000 GHZ = 3 THz)) range, which is almost totally unaccessible from ground based observatories because of the atmospheric blockage.
