The bright B2IV-V star HD 6226 was reported by Bozic and Harmanec (1998), from an examination of historical data, to have undergone some episodes of brightening which were accompanied by reddenings in B-V and blueings in U-B. They suggested on this basis that it might be an unrecognized Be star. We obtained a spectrum of HD 6226 using the Appalachian State University Dark Sky Observatory 0.45-m telescope and low resolution spectrograph on 11 November 2000 UT. The spectrum was centered near Hα , and covered the range from 5900 Å to 6650 Å. The spectrum clearly shows strong Hα emission. This is the first reported detection of Hα emission from HD 6226, and confirms that it is a previously unknown Be star. Further observations of this object are planned to monitor variations in the strength of the Hα feature, and extend the observations to include the other Balmer lines.
