Published observational data on fireball meteors and noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are analyzed statistically. The conditions under which NLCs can be observed and the criteria for selecting observational material are discussed in detail; NLC data from the West European Network at Edinburgh and fireball data from the Central European Network at Ondrejov are compared for the periods 1953-1963, 1964-1975, and 1976-1980 (with a year-by-year analysis of the third period); and the duration of NLCs is also investigated. No positive relation linking fireballs (as a cause or trigger) with NLCs is found. The possibility that such a relationship is masked by vertical-material-transport mechanisms is considered.
