We present an overview of results from the first science flight of the FIREBall (Faint Intergalactic Redshifted Emission Balloon) experiment, and discuss implications for the design of the next generation FIREBall payload and future satellite missions.. After summarizing the highlights from our blind, targeted and statistical search for emission from the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), we describe several strategies that will provide more than an order of magnitude improvement over present capabilities, and that should put direct detection of emission from the WHIM at z<1 within reach.
