High dispersion long slit CCD echelle spectroscopy has been employed in the forbidden emission of the O II ion λλ7318.85, 7319.92, 7329.63, 7330.7 Å in the low excitation and structurally simple planetary nebula IC 418, to re-evaluate the 2P1/2,3/2 and 2D3/2,5/2 splitting in O II. Derived values of 1.09±0.02 Å and 10.70±0.03 Å respectively, are compared with those obtained by De Robertis, Osterbrock & McKee (1985). A quantitative discussion of the use of this multiplet as an electron density diagnostic in planetary nebulae is also included with particular application to IC 418.
