An analysis of the period in time and frequency adjacent to the beginning of type III bursts digitally recorded at Bleien, Switzerland, during the second half of 1980 is presented. It is found that a high percentage (10%, possibly more than 20%) of the type III bursts show fine structure in the form of narrow-banded spikes of 0.05 s and less duration. These spikes form 'clusters' of relatively large bandwidth. They are not totally polarized and are uniformly distributed over the disk. Individual spikes often exhibit highly variable polarization, which may even change sense. The average degree of polarization of the clouds is found to have a wider distribution than that of the associated type III bursts but to have generally the same sign. It is noted that the spikes are considerably different from type I bursts. The spikes are then classified on the basis of their occurrence in relation to the beginning of type III bursts.
