The paper deals with the program developed to perform the first step in processing an image digitalized from an astronomical plate: to retrieve individual objects discriminating them from background and determining their positions and sizes. The program FINDER is described that is used for a minicomputer in a line-by-line mode. Each line is scanned searching for pixels overcoming a threshold value. An example of processing one line is presented.
