Arcsecond-resolution radio images of the Crab Nebula and 3C 58 show a distinctive filamentary structure: much of the radio flux is concentrated in linear structures with lengths 5 - 20 times their widths. These filaments may contain important information about the turbulent relativistic fluid of electrons, positrons, and magnetic field that makes up a Crab-like supernova remnant, and about its interaction with the thermal ejecta from the supernova. New observations of 3C 58 (Reynolds and Aller, 1988) motivate a reconsideration of the problem of filaments. The author reviews previously advanced explanations for the origin of this thermal and nonthermal filamentation and concludes that many can be ruled out by current observations.
