We report on the discovery of pulsed high-energy gamma-ray emission with Fermi LAT of PSR B1509-58 (= PSR J1513-5908).
PSR B1509-58 is a young energetic rotation-powered pulsar with a very high average surface magnetic field of 1.5E13 Gauss, not much below the quantum-critical magnetic-field limit of 4.4E13 Gauss. It is one of the few pulsars detected in gamma-rays prior to Fermi with CGRO COMPTEL in the MeV energy range. These measurements and the flux limits from CGRO EGRET suggested a peculiar spectral behaviour with a spectral break below 30 MeV. Thanks to the superior sensitivity of Fermi LAT we gained new insights on the gamma-ray spectrum and pulse-profiles of PSR B1509-58. We will discuss if these measurements challenge the outer-gap model for this particular pulsar or if we are seeing the illusive QED effect of photon splitting at work.
