The Baade method is used to determine the distance to SN 1983K (4.5 +/- 2.5 Mpc) and the moment of envelope ejection (50 +/- 10 d) before the outburst (prior to the beginning of the luminosity increase). The latter result contradicts the standard models of supernova explosions. This contradiction is resolved in the concept of two successive matter ejections from the star. It is shown that the light curve up to 40 d (the 'dome') and the B-V color index curve can be explained by the interaction between the shock wave and the matter of the extended circumstellar envelope formed by the first ejection. The mass ejected during the SN 1983 explosion is estimated at 9-14 solar masses.
