Ways in which sudden storm commencements are manifested in midlatitude VLF radiation are examined. It is shown that, at night during SC, short (1-3 min) bursts of VLF radiation are observed which can precede the SC by about 1 min. A comparison with satellite data indicates that VLF bursts may be connected with solar-wind shock waves propagating in the form of fast magnetoacoustic waves and refracted in the magnetosphere.
