The ESA mission BepiColombo to Mercury could give raise to the excellent opportunity of an advanced in-situ investigation of the Mercurian surface layer. The objective is the exploration of the Mercurian crust and regolith via innovative geochemical instrumentation to determine the mineralogical composition and abundancies of the refractory and volatile elements. The isotopic composition contains information on the geothermometry, geological and impact history of Mercury. The trace elements are important indicators for partioning processes and the volatiles contain information on the gardening processes of the regolith layer. The determination of the distinct mineralogical constituents of regolith grains on a microscopic scale supports the identification of the origin of the regolith matter. Potential instrumentations could be mass spectrometers and, more recently, Raman spectrometers. Precise and sensitive in-situ observations will help to constrain the evolution models of Mercury, such as where in the solar system Mercury did accrete or if the silicates seperated from the high density matter after a tremendous impact.
