The photoionization model of broad line regions fails to explain the very strong Fe II lines in the spectra of active galactic nuclei. The authors review the progress of the studies of Fe II emission since the first identification of Fe II lines in the spectrum of QSO 3C 273, including both observations and theoretical explanations. They suggest a new way to this problem.
