A study of the excitation of features due to Fe II in published tracings of spectra of supernova 1972-e supports the identification of a feature by Kirshner et al. (1973) as being due to H-alpha. An approximate calculation indicates that the total mass of ionized hydrogen above the photosphere is of the order of 0.3 solar mass if most of the emission at H-alpha is due to recombinations.
