Analyses of several ancient sediments and oils for fatty acids reveal
that the even/odd predominance of n-acids can be preserved throughout
geological time. n-Alkanes from the same samples do not arise from the
n-fatty acids solely by decarboxylation. An abiological or recent
bacterial origin of the acids is considered.
