Maximum likelihood estimation of cosmological parameters from maps of the cosmic microwave background requires two computationally expensive steps: a chi (2) evaluation and a matrix determinant. Standard algorithms, applied to maps with N pixels, require O(N(3)) operations and are prohibitively expensive in CPU time. I present an approximate method requiring N(2) log (N) operations and discuss applications for the MAP, Planck, and balloon-borne CMB data sets.
