The relation between the extent of rotation of the plane of polarization of radio emission from extragalactic sources and the redshifts of the sources is analyzed in an attempt to estimate the possible rotation occurring in the intergalactic medium. A sample of 153 radio galaxies and quasars with known rotation measures and redshifts is used in the analysis. The results show that the observed rotation can be explained well by assuming that it is caused by the interstellar medium in the Galaxy and the plasma within the sources themselves. It is concluded that available data on the polarization of discrete radio sources are not sufficient for making a reliable estimate of possible rotation of the plane of polarization of their emission in intergalactic space and are even less sufficient for choosing one or another cosmological model.
