We report new limits on the absolute brightness and the spatial fluctuations of the cosmic infrared background (CIRB) at 65 and 90 μm. The observations have been carried out as a cosmological survey in the AKARI Deep Field South (ADF-S), which is the lowest cirrus region in the whole sky. After removing bright galaxies and subtracting zodiacal and Galactic foreground from the measured sky brightness, we have successfully measured the CIRB brightness and its fluctuations in a wide range of angular scale from ˜1 arcmin to a few degrees.
The measured CIRB brightness is <0.6 MJy/sr at 65 μm and 0.70±0.15 MJy/sr at 90 μm, which are consistent with the previous COBE results but significantly higher than the Spitzer results at 70 and 160 μm obtained by the stacking analysis for the 24 μm sources. By the power spectrum analysis of the diffuse map at 90 μm, we found not only shot noise due to individual galaxies but also a signature of the galaxy clustering with the power of ˜103 Jy2/sr at angular scales of 10-30 arcmin. These results provide new information on the evolution and clustering properties of infrared galaxies.
