A deep prime focus B plate and an R band CCD frame have been obtained of the group of Herbig-Haro objects, HH39, associated with NGC 2261 and R Monocerotis. Both reveal clearly the presence of a knot in HH39 which was very faint 25 years ago. This feature, which is designated as HH39G, is found to vary in brightness. The proper motion of HH39G over a 24-year span has also been measured and is compared with that for the other HH39 knots. The Hα profile of HH39G was observed with an echelle spectrograph. A loop or filament extending from HH39 towards the eastern extremity of NGC 2261 is apparent on both the plate and the CCD frame. The probable nature of this loop and its relation to a stellar-wind-driven flow between R Mon and HH39 is discussed. The prime focus plate also shows a striking linear feature to the south of R Mon, which is probably a beam of radiation escaping from the circumstellar disc.
