We have obtained JHK photometry for 44 faint carbon stars in the SMC and
confirmed the classification by medium-dispersion spectroscopy for 31 of
them. The majority of the stars (28) have bolometric absolute magnitudes
between -3 and -1.7 mag and log T(eff) not less than 3.55.
