THE resonance lines of Mg II occur at wavelengths (2802.7 Å, 2795 Å) just beyond the extinction limit of the Earth's atmosphere. Because sophisticated topical techniques can now be used at such wavelengths and because of the high cosmic abundance of magnesium, these lines are particularly important in ultraviolet astronomy. On the Sun, the lines consist of a broad absorption with a pronounced emission core similar to the H and K lines of Ca II but with much stronger emission, so that the Mg II H and K lines are much more sensitive indicators of chromospheric effects. The discovery1 of a structure in the core in the form of a double emission reminiscent of self-reversal has further demonstrated the similarity with Ca II. The structure of the emission core was well resolved in later2 rocket echelle spectrograms (of ~0.03 Å resolution) which gave detailed line profiles. These profiles were, however, composite ones averaged over a third of the solar disk, so that observations were needed with high resolution both spatially and spectrally in order to distinguish between profiles from quiet and active regions and to determine centre to limb variations.
