A considerable amount of research has been conducted with the objective to obtain a better understanding of the circulation of the earth's atmosphere. The present investigation is concerned with results of measurements obtained between 1975 and 1979. The results are presented both as aggregrates during a given period and as day-to-day sequences to demonstrate variations during geomagnetically quiet conditions. The features of the measurements are compared with the predictions of a NOAA model developed by Dickinson et al. (1980). For geomagnetically quiet conditions, the wind patterns exhibit certain common features during a given season and for a given solar activity. However, there is a substantial day-to-day variability.
