We have observed the emissions [S II] λ67l6 and [S III] λ9531 from the Jupiter plasma torus with an imaging spectrometer consisting of a narrow-band, tunable Fabry-Perot interferometer coupled to a CCD camera. The extension of the [S III] and [S II] images perpendicular to the symmetry plane of the torus was used to estimate the temperatures of the sulfur ions. A [S III] image obtained on 1980 March 13 gave a S2+ temperature between 2.2 × 105 K and 6.5 × 105 K. A [S II] image obtained on 1980 March 14 gave a S+ temperature of (5.8±0.8) × l04 K.
Observations of [S III] λ9531 emission were also carried out using the Fabry-Perot as a scanning spectrometer. S2+ temperatures obtained from the emission-line profiles were (1.4±0.6) × 106 K on 1980 March 18 and (3.1±1.9) × 105 K on 1980 March 19.
