Plans are discussed for placing an orbiting spacecraft around the planet Mars to observe its surface composition and atmospheric processes. This mission, which is known as the Mars Geoscience/Climatology Orbiter (MG/CO), represents a revitalization of the lagging U.S. planetary-exploration program through the use of 'off the shelf' technology. The exploration of Mars with the aid of the Mariner and Viking missions is briefly considered. Scientific interest remains centered on several issues yet unresolved by earlier Martian exploration. Information is needed about the present seasonal cycles of dust, water, and carbon dioxide. Other points of interest are related to the planet's climatic history, Martian bulk chemical composition, and the history of outgassing. Attention is given to a new solar system strategy for NASA, and missions conducted in cooperation with the European Space Agency.
