Extreme cycles of the Chandler motion of the earth's pole are investigated. It is established that these cycles consist of growth and damping phases. The parameters characterizing the resonance mechanism of excitation of the motion of the earth's pole differ considerably from cycle to cycle, while the parameters of the damping phases are practically constant. This indicates the unsteadiness of the excitation mechanism and the constancy of the process of relaxation of the motion of the earth's pole. The results obtained can be used in geophysics and, in particular, in meteorology to study large-scale, long-period phenomena of atmospheric dynamics through the use of the connection between seasonal movements of air masses and the earth's rotation.
