Scientific paper
The singularity vs. the plurality of inhabited worlds in the universe is
debated. Attention is given to astrophysical constraints on the
evolution of intelligent species and to motivations for interstellar
communication and exploration. It is argued that it is plausible that
there is only one inhabited planet in the universe.
