It is pointed out that the question concerning the existence of life on other planets is of fundamental importance for humanity. An affirmative answer would have decisive consequences for man's concepts of the universe and his own position in it. An investigation regarding the probability of an origin of life is conducted, taking into account laboratory studies related to the conditions for the formation of organic compounds required for the development of living organisms. The possibility to establish contact with an advanced civilization is considered. It is concluded that studies concerning the formation of planets and the origin and evolution of life appear to be more meaningful than an intensification of efforts to establish contact with another civilization.
