We have used our second generation core accretion formation model to generate populations of synthetic extrasolar planets. By means of a synthetic observational bias we have then sorted out the subpopulation detectable with today's RV surveys and compared this subpopulation in quantitative statistical tests with the observed population. We have found that we can reproduce with high statistical significance the most important distributions, like the mass or the semimajor axis distribution. Having passed this test, we can use the full synthetic population (containing many small planets, undetectable today) to make predictions what tomorrow's RV and transit surveys will see, and how this will help to constrain formati on models.
